Chandigarh, July 20
The Cyber Cell of Chandigarh Police has arrested a 24-year-old Ghana national for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 3.25 lakh by posing as an NRI. The victim had met him on a matrimonial site. A team led by Inspector Hari Om, SHO Cyber Crime police station, nabbed the accused, identified as Gedion (24), from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The police said two mobile phones, 24 blank debit cards, a cloning machine and three laptops had been recovered from the accused. The accused was today produced in court, which remanded him in one-day police custody. The 38-year-old victim, a resident of Sector 30, had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial site after which she received a request from a profile, created under name Amit Bedi, who claimed to be a physiotherapist residing in the US.
The suspect started calling up the complainant on WhatsApp and expressed his desire to marry her.
The complainant alleged the suspect claimed he would visit India. She subsequently received a call from a man claiming to be an Airports Authority of India official, saying “Amit” had been detained at the Mumbai airport with excess US dollars. She was asked to deposit tax against the cash and given an HDFC Bank account number. The complainant took the bait and transferred Rs 3.25 lakh to the said account.
