Chandigarh lad bags gold medal at national-level squash meet

Local squash player Savir Sood won gold at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) National Tournament, held in Indore. Representing the city in the boys’ U-17 category, Sood won an exciting final against Laksmani Hari of Tamil Nadu. He lost the opening game 7-11, but bounced back in the next three with a 11-5 11-6 11-8 verdict.

Earlier, in semifinal, he faced a tough challenge from Atulit Tripathi of Uttrakhand. He won the first two games 11-4 11-7, but Tripathi made a strong comeback by winning the next two 8-11 9-11. In the final, Sood maintained a good show to log a 11-4 win. Before entering the national meet,

Sood won the Chandigarh State Squash Championship and ended up with a top rank (135 points) and also won the Allahabad Open—a three-star tournament. In October, he won the Khelshala Open by recording 11-5 11-6 11-7 win over Jinash Jain. Sood had earlier climbed to the summit of the Asian rankings in the boys’ U-15 age group.
