The first tender has been floated for a community centre in Sector 24 to be built at a cost of over Rs 10 crore. The construction will be completed in two years.

The demand for a community centre in the sector was raised long ago, but due to the financial crisis the project failed to take off in the past.

Besides, the MC has invited e-quotation for structural drawing for the construction of a community centre in Sector 63. It has also floated the tender of over Rs 8 crore for the reconstruction of existing community centre in Sector 29. The total cost of the project will be around Rs 8,45,64,00. Besides, the MC is planning to build new community centres in Sector 51, Bapudham Colony in Sector 26 and Manimajra.

An official of the Municipal Corporation said the UT Department of Urban Planning has already approved the drawings of the new community centres. The General House of the MC had approved six new community centres in a meeting last year. Of the six community centres, four are coming up at new locations — Bapudham Colony in Sector 26, Sectors 24, 51 and 63.

The remaining two community centres in Sector 29 and Manimajra will be reconstructed after demolishing the existing buildings. An MC official said the two community centres were constructed years ago and required reconstruction to fulfil the requirements of residents. Officials said the financial position of the

MC has improved now after the Chandigarh Administration gave additional aid last year. The MC, too, has been able to generate more revenue and is expecting more funds in the financial year 2026-27.
