Chandigarh MC to spend Rs 5 crore on upgrading infra in villages
Water supply, sewerage system to be strengthened, says Mayor
In a major step towards improving water supply and sewerage infrastructure in villages, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will spend Rs 5 crore in next financial year.
The provision for the upgrade has been made in the budget estimate for the financial year 2026-27.
Mayor Saurabh Joshi said there was a need for providing better infrastructural facilities in areas recently merged with the Municipal Corporation. He added that the villages where infrastructure will be improved include Butrela, Badheri, Burail, Attawa, Hallomajra, Dadumajra, Maloya, Palsora and Kajheri.
The water supply and sewerage system will also be improved in Dhanas, Sarangpur, Khuda Alisher, Khuda Lohara, Khudda Jassu, Makhana Majra, Behlana, Raipur Khurd, Kaimbwala, Kishangarh, Mauli Jagran, Daria and Raipur Kalan.
Joshi added that for the ongoing and new proposed works, which are to be executed during 2026-27, a provision of Rs 5 crore has been kept.
He said the infrastructure for supply of tertiary treated water will also be improved next year. A network is required to be laid in the left over areas. A budgetary provision of Rs 1 crore has been made for ongoing and new proposed works to be executed during 2026-27.
With this amount existing tertiary water supply network and new machinery will be provided and existing setup strengthened, the mayor added.
Besides, the MC will spend Rs 2.40 crore on providing basic amenities to economic weaker sections. Slum-dwellers have been rehabilitated in various rehabilitation colonies by the Chandigarh Administration. The rehabilitation colonies are Indira Colony, Mauli Jagran Colony, Bapu Dham Colony in Sector 26, Kajheri Colony in Sector 52, Palsora Colony in Sector 56, Maloya Colony, Dadumajra Colony, Milk Colony Dhanas, Janta & Kumhar Colony in Sector 25, Ram Darbar and Khuda Lahora Colony and new Dhanas Colony.
These colonies were provided with basic amenities at the time of inception. However, with the passage of time residents constructed multiple floors resulting in a steep increase in population. The services provided in these colonies are overburdened and need an upgrade.
The mayor said for ongoing and new works which are to be executed during 2026-27 provision of Rs 2.40 crore has been made. With the amount, water supply & sewerage and storm water drainage lines in various colonies in Chandigarh will be strengthened.
