The Engineering Department of the civic body has floated a tender for the redevelopment works.
Officials said the selected agency would be required to complete the work within three months. The project is part of the MC’s broader plan to upgrade city markets in a phased manner.
The upgradation plan for Sector 40-D market has been taken up after traders raised concerns over long-pending civic issues. Traders said the market has suffered neglect for years, with damaged paver blocks and a deteriorating parking area that requires urgent relaying.
As part of the renovation, existing kerb and channel stones from the footpaths and central verge will be removed and replaced. Old interlocking paver blocks from the footpaths and central verge will also be replaced with new ones.
Satish Kumar, president of the Market Welfare Association of Sector 40-D, said no development work had been carried out in the market for the past 15 years. He added that there is no public toilet in the market and that the parking area gets flooded during rain.
Sanjiv Chadha, president of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, said market upgradation has been a key agenda in discussions with MC officials. He said traders contribute significantly to government revenue and deserve better facilities for customers visiting the markets.
