Chandigarh Municipal Corporation orders strict enforcement of 4-bin waste rule
Violators to face penalties as revised Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 implemented
All households in Chandigarh are now required to segregate waste into four distinct categories, replacing the earlier two-bin system.
With the implementation of the revised Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the city has officially transitioned to a four-bin waste segregation system, marking a significant step towards scientific waste management and cleaner urban living.
The colour-coded system includes green bins for wet waste, blue bins for dry waste, red bins for sanitary waste and black bins for hazardous waste such as medicines, e-waste and bulbs.
Municipal Commissioner(MC) Amit Kumar said, “The four-bin system is a crucial reform towards sustainable waste management and environmental protection. Strict adherence is non-negotiable.”
He also said, “All field staff must ensure effective implementation on ground, and any negligence will invite disciplinary action. At the same time, citizens must act responsibly or face penalties under the rules.”
The new system mandates proper handling of sanitary waste, requiring items such as diapers and sanitary pads to be securely wrapped in designated pouches before disposal.
Bulk waste generators, including large residential societies and institutions, have also been directed to process wet waste at source, while construction and demolition waste must be stored separately.
He appealed to residents to actively cooperate by following key practices such as waste segregation at source, timely disposal, avoiding open dumping, spreading awareness and reporting violations.
The MC reiterated that this initiative aims to transform Chandigarh into a model city for cleanliness, sustainability and efficient waste management, with active participation from both citizens and officials being essential for its success.
