The UT police have apprehended three persons from Gujarat for committing a digital arrest fraud on a senior citizen.
The suspects were identified as Ramesh Ajay Bhai Abchung, Yogesh Devji Maheshwari and Hitesh Naran Boricha.
A case was registered in December last year after an elderly person from the city reported a fraud of Rs 46 lakh.
Through technical surveillance and field intelligence, investigators traced the money trail to Gandhi Dham, Kuchchh. They first apprehended Ramesh Ajay Bhai Abchung as Rs 15 lakh of the defrauded money was credited in his bank account. Investigations revealed that Ramesh had not acted alone and he had provided his account details to Yogesh Devji Maheshwari and Hitesh Naran Boricha, who then funneled the information to a contact in Ahmedabad for a commission. They were arrested too.
The accused were brought to Chandigarh on transit remand. During interrogation, they confessed to having facilitated the cyber fraud by routing stolen money through various bank accounts to mask its origin.
The accused have been sent to judicial custody after their two-day police remand ended. Further investigation in the case is on to trace other members of the syndicate.
