Chandigarh, December 31

Chandigarh University, Gharuan, won the overall trophy of the North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival held at Panjab University here on Monday.

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, was the first runner-up and the PU was the second runner-up.

Chandigarh University bagged the overall trophy by winning the first positions in one-act play, classical vocal solo, percussion and Indian group song, while it won the second position in the western group song, western instrumental and folk tribal dance. It was at the third spot in mimicry and photography.

By winning the above positions, it won the overall trophy in music while the team was declared First Runner-Up in theatre.

In the 5-day event, 35 universities of the North Zone with more than 1,000 students participated in the same.

There were 27 events and the three winners in each of the events will go for the national-level AIU youth festival to be held from February 1 to 5 at Chandigarh University, Gharuan.

All team managers who had come with their respective universities were honoured at the event. Addressing the participants, Rana KP Singh, speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly, who was chief guest, said: “I can see the future political leaders, scientists, bureaucrats and Army officers among the participants at the youth fest.”

He said when India was a slave country, a generation came which embraced punishment in jails and freed us. “Then, another generation came which constructed roads, hospitals and schools and built institutions such as PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) and the PU. Now, it is your turn,” he added.

Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director, Youth Welfare, PU, said: “No one loses in youth festivals. Either you will win or learn.”

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar expressed gratitude to the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, for giving the opportunity to the PU for hosting Yuvotsav-2018.

Tale of excellence, confusion

  • Students of School of Communication Studies, PU, brought out a daily pull-out for five days and produced six news bulletins on Radio Jyotirgamaya on various activities at youth fest.
  • Chaos marred the prize distribution function at youth fest on Monday. Announcers were confused about universities’ names. At one point, the ceremony stopped for a while as framed certificates of respective universities were not found.
  • The prize distribution function went on for more than three hours. When the turn of the GNDU and the Panjab University came to receive their overall trophies, there were hardly any students left for group pictures.
