Chandigarh varsity lifters triumph

MOHALI:Chandigarh University lifters Rashmi and Manisha won five gold and one silver medal in the Senior and Junior National Powerlifting Championship 2018 in Patiala.

Chandigarh University lifters Rashmi and Manisha won five gold and one silver medal in the Senior and Junior National Powerlifting Championship 2018 in Patiala. 

Representing Haryana in the championship, the Sonipat girls created history as they topped their respective categories with record lifts.

Rashmi broke two national records en route her gold medal in the 72kg weight category, lifting overall 526kg — 201kg in the dead-lift alone. 

The previous record was held by a Railways’ athlete — 520kg overall lift, 200kg dead-lift.

Manisha, meanwhile, won the overall gold in the 57kg category in the Junior Powerlifting Championship. She broke the national record in the dead-lift category by lifting 172.5kg. The previous record was set at 167.5kg.

The effort also enabled Manisha win the Strongest Women of India title.  

Rashmi also dominated the field in bench-press and dead-lift competitions, lifting 120kg and 201kg, respectively. She also won a silver medal in the squat contest with a lift of 205kg.

Lifters from 20 states participated in the Senior National Powerlifting Championship, athletes from 16 states participated in the junior competition. The tournament was organised by the Powerlifting Federation of India.
