City celebrates I-Day with fervour

PATIALA:The 72nd Independence Day was celebrated at the Yadavindra Public School (YPS) stadium in the city with enthusiasm on Wednesday.

The 72nd Independence Day was celebrated at the Yadavindra Public School (YPS) stadium in the city with enthusiasm on Wednesday. Rural Development and Panchayats, Housing and Urban Development Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa hoisted the National Flag and addressed the gathering from all over the district on the occasion. 

He said Independence and happiness of the country were results of innumerable sacrifices by the people of the nation. “People of the state along with the police should fight the drug menace. Captain Amarinder Singh’s government decided to take stringent measures to root out drug menace and broke the supply chain,” he added.

District and Sessions Judge Sanjeev Berry, Commissioner, Patiala division, Deepinder Singh, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AS Rai, Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu attended the program. 

Eleven teams, including India Tibet Border Police (ITBP), District Patiala police, Punjab Police men and women wings along with Home Guards, participated in the parade commanded by DSP (Probational) Mohit Aggarwal.

 “The Punjab Government will celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Programmes will be held to mark the same throughout the year,” said Bajwa. 

“Cities in relation to the guru, including Sultanpur Lodhi and Dera Baba Nanak, will be revamped,” he added. “The state government will provide sewerage in villages. Almost 70 per cent villages in the state will be covered under this facility till 2022,” he said.

“Residents of Patiala are fortunate to get a Chief Minister from their city, which is being developed at expenditure of Rs 1,000 crore,” he added. 

Bajwa also welcomed the youth associated with the buddies’ group. He honoured family members of freedom fighters and gave away sewing machines and tricycles to the needy. 

All government departments, including Health, Horticulture, Mahatma Gandhi Sarbat Vikas Yojna, Sports and others took out 14 presentations after the march past.

Students of various schools presented cultural programmes, including Bhangra, Giddha, and sang National Anthem on the occasion.

Drive to create awareness on digital payment launched

Officials of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) celebrated the 72nd Independence Day on Wednesday. Baldev Singh Sran, chief managing director (CMD), PSPCL, unfurled the National Flag on the occasion.

Addressing the participants Sran said under the PSPCL had launched various consumer friendly schemes, including VDS, One Time Settlement Scheme, Paani Bachao, Paise Kamao and special camps for transfer of ownership of AP consumers in the state.

The PSPCL launched a drive to spread awareness about digital bill payment methods on the occasion. 

Sran said under this awareness campaign, an informative leaflet containing salient features of available digital payment modes, charges of digital transactions and other important details would be distributed to electricity consumers of the state.

“With the support of electricity consumers, on July 16, 2018, PSPCL achieved a landmark in digital collections by collecting Rs 220 crore on a single day. During July, 2018, 45.43 per cent of total electricity collections of the PSPCL have been received through digital modes, which is the highest record of digital collection in this segment in the country,” he added.

I-Day celebrated at PRTC

Independence Day was celebrated at the main office of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) on Wednesday. The PRTC chairman, Manjeet Singh Narang, unfurled the National Flag on the occasion. 

He said the department had started registering gains instead of losses due to efforts of the employees. Hundred new ordinary busses, 20 high voltage air-conditioned buses and 3 volvo buses would be run in the state, he added. Officials also honoured devoted workers of the PRTC on the occasion.
