The city will get a second medical college as the UT has started work on the proposal. This was announced by UT Adviser Manoj Kumar Parida at a Republic Day function at Parade Ground, Sector 17, yesterday.

The Adviser unfurled the Tricolour and gave away awards to employees and residents for their meritorious service and contribution to society. Recounting the achievements of the Administration in various fields, he announced new initiatives that are to be started soon.

He said the intake for the MBBS course had been increased from 100 to 150 seats, which would provide more opportunities to local deserving students. A proposal to create a second medical college was in the pipeline.

He said a proposal for adoption of the online transfer policy was also under consideration. He said a new sports complex had been constructed in Sector 39 to improve the sports infrastructure. A world-class shooting range was also in the pipeline. He said for the convenience of residents, the Municipal Corporation would soon start an online process for approval of building plans. He said with an aim to segregate non-motorised traffic, a 194-km cycle track had been made operational. He said more houses were under construction for employees of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. He said Sector 17 had been made vendor-free, a project to remove garbage from the Dadu Majra had been started and the city had started getting additional 29 MGD of water from Kajauli.

UT police bag overall best turn award

The Chandigarh Police received the overall best turn award in the parade whereas in the category of military forces/police contingent, the first prize was bagged by the Chandigarh Ladies Police (RTC) and Haryana Police-II, the second position was bagged by Punjab Police-I, while Punjab Police-II came third.

In the category of Home Guards/Fire Brigade/Civil Defence, the first prize was bagged by the Chandigarh Home Guards, the second position was bagged by Chandigarh Fire Services/Brigade and the Civil Defence came third.

In the NCC contingents, Air Wing bagged the first position, NCC Army Wing (Boys) came second and the NCC Naval Wing (Boys) came third. In another category of bands, the Institute for Blind, Sector 26, got the first position, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, got the second position and Moti Ram Arya Senior Model School, Sector 27-A, got the third position.

In the category of NSS girls/NSS boys/schoolchildren, NSS boys of Shri Guru Harikrishan Senior Secondary School-40, got the first position, NSS boys of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, got the second position and NSS boys of the GMSSS, Sector 38 (West), got the third position. In the category of tableaux, the model jail got the first position, the Education Department got the second position and the Forest Department got the third prize.
