Mohali, January 23

An 18-year-old school student allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his father’s licenced revolver at his residence in Phase X around 4 pm here on Thursday.

According to police, the boy took the extreme step after returning from his tuition this evening. “We were told that he returned from his tuition and locked himself in a room. After sometime, he shot himself on his forehead with a .32-bore revolver, belonging to his father,” police said, adding that the victim’s stepmother was present at home at the time of the incident.

According to the police, the boy hailed from Bathinda and was staying with his family in a rented accommodation. His father works in a private company here.

The family was planning to send the boy abroad for higher studies after completion of his Class XII. According to sources, he was also preparing for NDA exam and had also won medals in boxing and kabaddi.

The police said according to the victim’s father, the boy was depressed for the past few months. “His mother had died when he was child,” said the police.

Inspector Kulvir Singh, Station House Officer of Phase XI Police Station, said after getting the information around 4 pm police reached the spot. “We took the boy to Civil Hospital at Phase 6 where doctors declared him brought dead. The cause behind the suicide seems to be depression due to the death of his mother but we are still investigating the matter to check other angles,” said the SHO.

The body has been kept at mortuary of the civil hospital where post mortem would be conducted tomorrow.

The SHO said they have recovered the weapon and initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174, CrPC.

The victim is survived by his parents and a younger brother.
