Patiala, March 5

As the post of the principal of Government Medical College, Patiala, has fallen vacant following the retirement of Dr BL Bhardwaj on February 28, the Medical Education Department has approached the screening committee, which looks into the urgency of new appointments, for filling the post during the poll code of conduct as soon as possible for the smooth functioning of the institute.

After Dr BL Bhardwaj’s retirement, the Medical Education Department has not even formally given the charge to anyone, following which all financial transactions have been halted.

Moreover, even the vice-principal has been on leave for the past almost one month following which senior most Professor, Dr BS Sidhu, Head of Psychiatry and Drug De-Addiction Department, is heading the command of the institute just to keep the institute administratively functional.

Speaking to The Tribune, Vikas Partap, Secretary, Medical Education, said: “Since the poll code is in place, we had moved an application with the screening committee urging it to permit the department for recruiting the new incumbent. The department understands the urgency of the matter and as soon as the screening committee gives us a go ahead, we will get it approved from the Election Commission and fill the vacant post”.

Meanwhile, one of the senior doctors on condition of anonymity said the Medical Education Department had deliberately delayed the appointment and was waiting for results of the Assembly poll on March 11 before taking any decision in this regard.

“The department knew that the principal was retiring, but still it did not bother to give the charge to anyone. Now, when the new government comes, it will take its own time to settle down and we cannot afford to leave such important post vacant for so long. The department can’t spend even a single penny till someone is given the official charge, following which no payments for different works in the college can be made,” he said.

Demanding the appointment of a regular principal with immediate effect, General Secretary of the Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association Dr DS Bhullar said considering that the exams were on and the upgrade of the college was also in the process, the post could not be left vacant for a single day considering that there were a lot of financial engagements.

“The department should have started this process long time ago. Nonetheless, we urge the department to fill the post at the earliest,” said Bhullar.
