Chandigarh, August 17

Heavy rain led to waterlogging and virtually brought the city to a standstill with traffic snarls witnessed across the city. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace on all major roads, including Dakshin Marg, especially the stretch from Zirakpur to Tribune Chowk, and Madhya Marg, including the stretch between the Housing Board light point and the Transport light point.

Traffic snarls were also witnessed in various other parts of the city, including the Sector 20 gurdwara chowk, the JW Marriott chowk, the Sector 17 Press light point and the Sector 16 stadium chowk, despite the fact that cops were stationed at various intersections to regulate traffic.

Flooded roads left many commuters stranded after their cars broke down, while many commuters preferred to park their cars on the roadside and waited for the situation to get normal. Pankaj, a Zirakpur resident, said it took him almost an hour to reach the city from his home. “The vehicle was moving slowly due to waterlogged roads,” he said. A rush was witnessed on the roads during the morning hours. The situation turned normal later. However, minor traffic snarls were witnessed in various others parts of the city till afternoon.

City records 24.1 mm of rainfall

The city witnessed heavy rain on Friday morning. According to the Met Department, the city recorded 24.1 mm of rainfall. The weatherman has predicted more rain in the coming days.
