Conserve resources to save environment: Expert

Pattern of climate is changing, which is worrisome. It is an important issue that may affect the future of mankind. This was stated by Professor Emeritus Dr CK Varshney while delivering the keynote address at an event, “We4Climate: Lecture Series on Climate Change and Sustainable Development”, at an auditorium in Sector 26 here today.

Varshney laid stress on the need to conserve resources to save the environment. He gave the example of air pollution in Delhi and its adverse effects on human health. He suggested ways to check stubble burning, which is a major cause of air pollution.

The lecture series was organised by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE). Supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), India, the event was organised in partnership with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST).

The series was part of the Indo-German bilateral initiative, “Climate Change Adaptation in Rural Areas of India”. Students, researchers, policymakers, academics and representatives of NGOs attended the programme.

Earlier, Sharad Gaur, Scientist-G and senior programme director, CEE, welcomed the delegates and participants.

Dr Jatinder Kaur Arora, Executive Director of the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, who was the chief guest, delivered the inaugural address. Dr SS Ladhar, Additional Director, PSCST, proposed the vote of thanks. Ishupinder Kaur, state project officer, GIZ, coordinated the programme.

In the post-lunch session, three group discussions on the role of the government, NGOs and research organisations and youth in responding to the challenges of climate change were held.
