Rajesh K Arya, member of State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Chandigarh, has said the Consumer Protection Act of 2019 had brought significant reforms to safeguard consumer interests in India.

Speaking at a seminar organised on World Consumer Rights Day today at the Consumer Commission, Sector 19, Arya said the legislation marked a new era in consumer rights’ protection, addressing contemporary challenges and the fast-evolving marketplace.

He said the main aim of the Act was to provide consumers with better avenues for resolving grievances, ensuring greater accountability from businesses and fostering transparency in consumer transactions.

Arya added that the disposal of consumer cases in SCDRC is 97%, which is highest in the country.

He said the facility of video-conferencing was available in the State Commission since Covid times. Mediation Cells have already been established in the commission and consumers can take benefit of redressal of their disputes through mediation. “The full benefit of the legislation can only be realised if we, as consumers, are aware of our rights and responsibilities,” he added.

Advocate Ajay Jagga said there was urgent need to start an awareness drive regarding consumer rights. This year’s theme ‘A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles’ highlights the need for shift toward eco-friendly ways of living while ensuring that no one is left behind, he added. The seminar was organised by the Department of Food and Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Chandigarh, in association with the Consumers Association.
