Corruption seems to be deep rooted in the UT traffic police as at least three incidents of cops allegedly taking a bribe from motorists have come to the fore in less than a month.

Home Guards volunteer Sanjeev Rana has been dismissed by the Police Department after it was found that he had taken a bribe of Rs 500 from a motorist at the Hallo Majra light point on Wednesday. The action was taken on the basis of a video, which went viral, showing the volunteer being made to return the bribe money to the traffic offender.

In August, two cops were suspended for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 500 from a resident of Jammu and Kashmir. Complainant Rakesh Gupta had highlighted the incident on Twitter following which the Police Department swung into action and got an investigation initiated. During the investigation, it was found that the cops had taken the bribe for not challaning the complainant for jumping the red light even though the complainant had claimed that he had not committed the offence.

On September 5, two traffic cops, Head Constable Jagjinder Singh and Constable Sachin Kumar, were dismissed after a Haryana resident complained that they took a bribe of Rs 1,000 from him for not issuing a challan for jumping the red light. Later, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against them.
