The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) House meeting was an acrimonious affair today as several councillors flagged the halt of mechanical sweeping on B roads and piles of garbage spread across the city in the residential and public areas. Councillors said the work was taken back from the existing contractor and given to another.

Councillors vented their ire on MC officials for not doing one bit in resolving the long-pending issue of garbage disposal.

“The Mohali MC Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner’s role has been reduced to giving statements in the media, but doing nothing on ground. It has been more than two years, no solution has been found yet for the waste disposal,” said Phase-11 councillor Kulwant Singh Kaler.

Ward No. councillor Manjit Singh Sethi said, “The civic body is struggling to maintain cleanliness in the city. There is no question of cleaning newly acquired areas. Let the MC hire manpower and machinery before starting new project. This is why agenda No.5 has been kept pending.”

Councillors also flagged the increasing stray dog problem in the city. Mayor Sidhu highlighted that the menace of stray dogs was increasing day by day in various parts of the city, resulting in continuous complaints from residents and municipal councillors.

He has written a letter to the MC Commissioner seeking immediate action in this connection. In his letter, the Mayor suggested coordinating with the Punjab Home Guards Canine Training and Breeding Institute, Sundran village, Mohali district, a government institution that has around 16 acres of land available. The Mayor proposed exploring the possibility of temporarily housing stray canine roaming in the city at this facility, with the aim of reducing dog bite incidents and the atmosphere of fear among residents.
