Chandigarh: Couple among three held for work visa fraud
Accused ran an overseas placement agency in Sector 17, Chandigarh
Three persons, including a couple, have been arrested for cheating youths out of lakhs on the pretext of sending them abroad.
The accused were identified as Bhateh Singh of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, Anubhav Garg, a resident of Sangrur in Punjab, and his wife Akanksha.
The accused ran an overseas placement agency in Sector 17, Chandigarh, and lured people with false promises of sending them to Europe on work visas.
The complainant, a resident of Panchkula, stated that he came in contact with one of the accused on an online platform. He was duped of Rs 1.55 lakh on the pretext of arrange a work visa for Luxembourg. A case was registered at the Chandimandir police station.
The police arrested Bhateh Singh on January 22. He was produced in court, which sent him to three-day police remand. Further investigation led to the arrest of the Sangrur couple on January 29. The couple had 15 cases of similar fraud registered against them in Chandigarh. They were produced in court today, which remanded them in two-day police custody.
Fake immigration agent arrested for Rs 9L fraud
The police have arrested a fake immigration agent who allegedly duped a local resident of nearly Rs 9 lakh on the pretext of securing him a New Zealand work visa.
The accused was identified as Mandeep Singh of Ludhiana. The police said the accused lured the complainant with false promises of providing employment abroad. According to the complainant, he met the accused, who claimed to be a visa agent, through an acquaintance in June 2023. After collecting his documents, Mandeep allegedly took a total of Rs 9 lakh over a period in the name of procedures and fees.
The accused had set up an office in Sector 17-C and showed fake job offer letters and airline tickets to the complainant.
A case was registered at the Chandimandir police station. During the investigation, a team led by Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit incharge Yogvinder Singh arrested Mandeep on January 27. The accused was produced in a court the next day, which sent him to three-day police remand.
DCP Srishti Gupta said Mandeep was a repeat offender with four cases registered against him in Panchkula and Punjab for cheating people on the pretext of securing work visas for New Zealand and Canada.
