CTU to install dash cams in buses

Next time you think about jumping the red signal or driving rashly, think again, as chances are that this act of yours might get recorded and be sent to the Chandigarh traffic police.

The Chandigarh Administration is considering installing dashboard cameras in all government vehicles like PCR, fire brigade and ambulances. The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has become the first department that has decided to install dashboard cameras in all buses soon.

Sources said installing dashboard cameras had been made a part of the tender for the Intelligent Transportation System to be adopted in all CTU buses. The CTU is making the transport system hi-tech with the financial assistance of the World Bank at a cost of over Rs 13 crore.

An officer of the CTU said the cameras would record everything coming in the way of the routes. These cameras would record the view through the front windscreen. In case a bus meets with an accident, the recording would help in identifying the person who was at fault.

The issue of installing dashboard cameras was also discussed in the last meeting of the Road Safety Council. In the meeting, members suggested to install these cameras in all government vehicles like ambulance, fire brigade and PCR. Harman Sidhu, one of the council members, said after government vehicles, residents would also be persuaded to install these cameras in their vehicles. He said in most of the accident cases, accused get benefit due to the lack of proofs, but with the help of dashboard cameras they would be caught.
