After Chandigarh Tribune highlighted the plight of students of Government Model High School, Vikas Nagar, who were forced to sit on the floor in corridors in the biting cold, the Education Department acted swiftly by sending Deputy District Education Officer Renu Puri to the school to take cognisance of the matter today.

The school authorities told the official that a teacher took the exam in the corridors for 10 minutes only.

In a report, the school head stated that the students were adjusted inside classrooms only. However, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Director Surender S Dahiya, who also went to the school as part of a routine visit today, said, “Some classes were being run from corridors. The school has made arrangements so that the students don’t suffer, but as there are less rooms to accommodate the overall strength, the school is left with no option.”

District Education Officer Anujit Kaur said, “The school has a problem of excessive strength and there are less rooms to accommodate the students. However, the problem will be solved as a new building at Raipur Kalan will be ready by April and students will be accommodated in it. We have directed the school head to take measures to cope with the winter and not make students sit in corridors.”

Yesterday, Chandigarh Tribune had found students sitting in corridors while taking lessons and writing a test.

There are 3,267 students in the school with only 30 rooms for instructional purposes. To accommodate such a huge strength of students, the school also runs in a double shift.
