Deaf & mute school students hold protest

Students of Vatika Special School, Sector 19, Chandigarh, stage a protest demanding better facilities and appointment professional faculty outside the school premises today. The school serves children with Hearing and Speech Impairment and is a venture of the Punjab IAS Officer’s Wives Association (PIOWA).

Many students from Classes VI to XII participated in the protest and were joined by some former students and parents. The students submitted six major demands to the school management. Their key demand is the appointment of specialised teachers for Classes VIII to XII.

According to the students, teachers often teach by writing on the blackboard, making it difficult for them to understand lessons and communicate their questions. “We have received the students’ demands and it has been forwarded to the management for further action,” said Kavita, Principal of the school.

The students also demanded that Maths and Science be introduced from Classes IX to XII. “We have given already advertisements, but yet to receive the response from the eligible teachers,” added Kavita.

The students also demanded pick-and-drop bus facility. Students said an electric bus is available, but is not being used regularly as there is no charging facility on the campus.

“There has been some problem with the charging, as the bus has been procured recently. However, we are already solving the issue,” added the principal.
