Patiala, June 11

With the maximum temperature touching 45.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, the district broke last two years record of the month of June.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 29 degrees Celsius. In 2017, the maximum temperature recorded was at 46.3 degrees Celsius on June 5. The mercury was expected to rise in the next three days and was likely to touch 46 degrees Celsius by Sunday, said meteorological experts.

They said the heatwave was likely to continue in Patiala and other districts of the state for some more days.

The district has already recorded May as the hottest month this year over the past five years. However, the department has predicted cloudy sky tomorrow with the possibility of thunder or lightening.

Bathinda remains hottest in state

With 46.9 degrees Celsius, Bathinda and Ferozepur districts were hottest in the state on Monday. While Amritsar recorded a high of 45.2 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot witnessed a maximum temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius, 44.7 degrees Celsius and at 44.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Stay hydrated, say experts

With the maximum temperature about to touch 46 degrees Celsius in the district, health experts said people should keep themselves hydrated to avoid any medical emergency. They said people should drink enough water, even if they did not feel thirsty. Dr Gurmeet, district epidemiologist, said people could consume ORS, homemade drinks such as lassi, torani (rice water) and lemonade to stay hyderated.
