Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar formally inaugurated the 29th edition of Divya Kala Mela at the Sector 34 Exhibition Ground today.

Speaking on the occasion, Kumar described the event as a transformative initiative that had become a beacon of hope for Divyangjan across the country, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and equal opportunity.

The minister stated that the adoption of a respectful term, “Divyang”, symbolised a broader change in vision towards dignity and empowerment. He also made a reference to key initiatives such as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, which strengthened accessibility, participation and economic inclusion.

Kumar emphasised that true respect must translate into livelihood opportunities and self-reliance, which Divya Kala Mela actively promoted by connecting specially abled artisans and entrepreneurs directly to markets.

Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu said while according respect to Divyangjan aligned with India’s cultural ethos, empowerment through livelihood was equally essential. He appreciated the Ministry for organising an event that enabled Divyang youth to showcase and sell their products.

Mayor Saurabh Joshi termed the event a celebration of talent, confidence and human potential. He said hosting Divya Kala Mela, Divya Kala Shakti and the Rozgar Mela reflected Chandigarh’s commitment to inclusivity and reinforces the belief that disability was not a limitation but a distinct ability.

Rajiv Sharma, Joint Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), highlighted the economic impact of the initiative. Over the past three years, Divya Kala Melas across 28 cities, with participation of around 2,362 Divyang entrepreneurs generating income exceeding Rs 23 crore. Loans of over Rs 20 crore had also been sanctioned to strengthen entrepreneurship.

Around 75 stalls have been set up by Divyang entrepreneurs, government institutions and NGOs at the Sector 34 Exhibition Ground. A dedicated Rozgar Mela for Divyangjan will be held on February 19. Daily cultural performances are adding vibrancy to the event. A special cultural programme, “Divya Kala Shakti,” will be presented on February 21.

The 29th Divya Kala Mela stands not merely as a marketplace but as a movement, reinforcing the message that economic empowerment of Divyangjan strengthens families, communities and the nation, and advances the vision of an inclusive India built on dignity and self-reliance.
