Dr Bansal assumes presidency of Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnoea
Calls for interdisciplinary action against ‘silent sleep epidemic’
Dr Sandeep Bansal has assumed charge as president of the Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnoea (IASSA), outlining a comprehensive and collaborative strategy to address the rising burden of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in the country.
Describing OSA as a “silent epidemic”, Dr Bansal warned that the disorder carries serious cardiovascular, metabolic and neurocognitive consequences if left untreated. He emphasised that its management must move beyond isolated, single-specialty interventions towards a structured interdisciplinary framework.
Dr Bansal advocated closer coordination among ENT surgeons, pulmonologists, sleep physicians, maxillofacial surgeons, neurologists, anaesthesiologists and allied health professionals to ensure holistic, patient-centred care. He underlined that integrated clinical pathways would not only improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes, but also enhance long-term monitoring and compliance.
Under his leadership, IASSA would focus on developing evidence-based treatment protocols, promoting collaborative research and establishing standardised surgical pathways across institutions. Creating advanced training platforms for young clinicians and strengthening both national and international academic partnerships would also be central to the association’s agenda.
Expressing gratitude for the confidence placed in him, Dr Bansal reaffirmed his commitment to raising standards of sleep medicine and sleep surgery in India through innovation, education and unified clinical excellence.
