Deputy Commissioner Dr Sona Thind ordered immediate fixes for road accident black spots and a total ban on illegal, unsafe vehicles, including 'jugaadu' ones, to stem rising fatalities. More lives are now claimed in accidents than natural causes, she noted while chairing the District Road Safety Committee meeting.

She demanded urgent repairs to vulnerable stretches, plus new signages, rumble strips and warning boards outside schools to protect students.

The DC took a hard line on rogue vehicles. She instructed enforcement teams to challan, impound and prosecute operators, manufacturers and modifiers of banned 'jugaadu' vehicles and rehris flouting safety rules.

Dr Thind also pushed for prompt accident data uploads to the e-DAR portal and cashless treatment for victims under the government scheme. Reviewing the Safe School Vehicle Policy, she tasked the District Education Officer and District Child Protection Officer with rigorous school bus checks and stern action on violations.

Regional Transport Officer Ranpreet Singh Bhiora said January marked Road Safety Month statewide. The Transport Department in coordination with the police and other departments, conducted enforcement drives against traffic violators and organised awareness seminars in schools. Outreach programmes were also held at truck and tempo unions and other public places to sensitise citizens about traffic rules.
