Panjab University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Raj Kumar has asked all hostel wardens to ensure that no four-wheeler of any outsider is parked in the hostels’ (boys and girls) parking area, confirmed high placed sources.
The directions came after a few incidents of eve-teasing were reported near a girls’ hostel. In a meeting held yesterday, the VC has asked all wardens to ensure no parking of vehicles as per the university’s rules.
The matter pertaining to indiscipline by hostel residents and actions initiated was also discussed. The base of the discussion was an order, issued on July 21, by the DSW asking all wardens to comply with the Panjab University Syndicate orders making the university vehicle-free and not allowing newly admitted candidates to come to their respective departments on four-wheelers.
“There have been some eve-teasing incidents in the past. As soon as the matter was brought to the university’s security, miscreants left their vehicles in the hostel parking. Officials have to trace the vehicle owner and later call the police. No vehicle is allowed to enter the campus, without a sticker. However, it has been observed that outsiders come during the peak evening hours and stay here,” said a highly placed official.
“The wardens are asked to be strict and report any such activity to the security. It has also been asked to ensure no four-wheelers at the hostels’ parking,” the official said.
“The wardens are also asked to take strict action against those hostel residents, who indulge in any kind of indiscipline. In the meeting, the VC has directed to cancel their hostel membership. However, the action will be taken as per hostel rule books,” he said.
VC expresses unhappiness
Meanwhile, an official also confirmed that the VC expressed unhappiness over an official (DSW) going on an ex-India leave without giving her charge to any official. “However the approval was given from the VC office though the Registrar. In such a scenario, the charge comes to another DSW by default,” claimed an official.
“A meeting of wardens was held to ensure proper maintenance of their respective hostels as the new academic session 2022-23 is going to commence soon. The VC advised the wardens to ensure discipline among students. In case of indiscipline by any student, his/her parents may be informed about it and action may be taken as per the hostel rule book. The wardens were advised to ensure hostel parking as per the handbook of hostel rules. The leave of DSW (W) was duly sanctioned for her travel during the summer vacation,” said Prof Jagtar Singh, DSW.
