Chandigarh, November 7

The fourth day of the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO) – Asia Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) supported seminar on the theme “Blood-brain barrier: From basic physiology to neurological disorders” focused on treatment strategies to combat neurological disorders today.

Dr Jiban Jyoti Panda, Institute of Nanoscience and Technology, Mohali, said, “Blood-brain barrier seems to be a bottleneck and restricts drugs to cross through brain and treat neurological disorders. Yet, the advent of peptide nanostructures, which can cross blood brain barrier, can be a possible cure for gliomas.”

This was followed by a talk related to destruction of blood-brain barrier during alzheimer’s by Dr Sachin Tiwari, AIIMS, New Delhi.

Prof Dheeraj Khurana, Department of Neurology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, highlighted his work on an implant that can promote the stimulation of sphenopalatine ganglion nerve, which can lead to increase in the blood flow to brain of stroke patients.

Prof BR Mittal, Department of Nuclear Medicine, PGIMER, discussed imaging techniques like positron emission tomography (PET) for diagnosis and follow up for treatment of brain-related disorders. The day ended with a heritage walk of the city. — TNS
