Ferrying kids, 116 vehicles challaned

In a major drive to check traffic violations made by school buses and other vehicles, the UT traffic police issued as many as 159 challans. Of these, 116 were issued to vehicles carrying school students.

The police said it was a special drive to check traffic violations made by vehicles, including buses, vans and autos ferrying school students.

Nakas were laid at six locations to check violations of traffic rules and Safe Transportation Policy for Students (STRAPS) of the UT Administration.

As per the police, a total of 159 challans were issued and a school bus was impounded. As many as 48 school bus drivers, 45 autos and 23 taxis ferrying schoolchildren were challaned.

The police said besides challaning vehicles carrying schoolstudents, 31 challans were issued to two-wheeler riders caught without helmet. Besides, 12 challans were issued for other violations.

In a similar drive, a total of 181 school vehicles were fined for various offences by the traffic police in April this year. The police said to ensure safety of schoolchildren, they would continue the drive in the coming days.
