Mohali, June 28
Two days after a youth was shot at after a scuffle at a check-post in Dera Bassi, the Senior Superintendent of Police today ordered the registration of an FIR against the Mubarakpur police post in-charge, Sub-Inspector (SI) Balwinder Singh.
Mohali SSP Vivek Sheel Soni has also initiated departmental action against three police personnel present on the spot for major punishment. SI Balwinder Singh has already been suspended and transferred to the Police Lines.
The action followed after Balwinder Singh, who, along with a police party, was conducting routine checking, allegedly opened fire on the leg of a person, identified as Hitesh Kumar, following a scuffle with some individuals on the night of June 26.. A police vehicle was also vandalised by some people on the spot.
Following the incident, the SSP had constituted a special investigation team (SIT), headed by the SP, Headquarters, to probe the incident and submit a report.
Dera Bassi DSP Gurbakshish Singh said after watching videos, it came to light that a girl, Pooja, had torn the official dress of the SI and also tried to manhandle him. The SI also misbehaved with the girl and slapped her.
He said prima facie, after recording the statements of witnesses, it was felt that the situation could have been avoided and there was no need for the police to turn rash. The FIR has been registered against the SI under Sections 324, 354, 336 and 509 of the IPC at the Dera Bassi police station.
