Fire destroys two shops, 50 stalls in Ambala City

AMBALA: A major fire broke out at the famous cloth market in Ambala City here today. Two shops and nearly 50 stalls were destroyed in the fire. However, no casualty or injuries were reported in the incident.

A major fire broke out at the famous cloth market in Ambala City here today. Two shops and nearly 50 stalls were destroyed in the fire. However, no casualty or injuries were reported in the incident. The fire was noticed around 8.45 am. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. The total loss is feared to be over Rs 1 crore.

Fire officials had a tough time due to encroachments in the market. Sonam Sarees, the Tabela Chinese market and an office of a property dealer were destroyed in the fire.

Around 50 stalls used to be set in an open space, which was known as the Tabela Chinese market. 

Ronin, owner of Sonam Sarees, alleged that his shop was set on fire by the neighbouring shop owner as they had a property dispute. He said the person wanted him to vacate the property and he had been pressuring him to do so.

Besides fire engines from Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment, fire engines were also called from Panchkula, the Air Force Station and Dera Bassi. It took over five hours to completely douse the fire. The police had installed barricades around the market to stop vehicular traffic. 

Stall owners said they had stocked goods related to Raksha Bandhan and the entire stock was destroyed in the fire. They have sought support and help from the local administration.

ASI Ashok Kumar, in-charge of Police Post-2, said, “The statements of shop owners have been recorded and further action will be taken as per the report of forensic experts.”
