Flash floods caused loss of Rs12.6 cr in Mohali: Report

The recent flash floods, which hit the New Chandigarh area following a major breach in Naggal dam, caused a damage to the tune of Rs 12.64 crore.

The assessment has been made by the Mohali administration and a report in this regard has been sent by Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan to special secretary (revenue), Punjab.

Dayalan said as many as 24 villages had been affected due to floods and downpour. “Luckily, there was no loss of human life, but the floods washed away 20 cattle head,” said Dayalan, while adding that 12.05 acres were damaged in the floods.

While the most-affected areas are Chhoti Naggal, Badi Naggal, Mirzapur, Parol villages and other nearby areas. Some areas in Dera Bassi and Zirakpur also witnessed havoc due to inflated Ghaggar river, the DC said.

The report also stated that around 28 houses saw major damage due to floods. Dayalan added that the state government would now decide on compensation to the affected persons.

“The repair work of road infrastructure, bridges, dam and other such structures will start soon,” said Dayalan and added that the administration was extending helping hand to the people of the affected areas by organising relief and medical camps.
