An unknown fraudster posing as an Army man duped a Sector 35 trader of Rs 40,000 by siphoning off the money from a bank account.

Manish, an employee of a company, Network India, that deals in wooden flooring, said they had received an enquiry through Indiamart and called up the customer.

Manish, who has submitted a police complaint, said the fraudster introduced himself as Sharanjeet Singh, an Army man posted in Pulwama. “The suspect claimed that the wooden flooring had to be used in the Army canteen. He also sent a copy of his ID card on WhatsApp to make us believe that he was a defence personnel,” Manish said.

The suspect, however, claimed that since they did not have the Internet facility at Pulwama, they could not make an online transfer, but could make the payment through Google Pay.

Manish discussed the matter with company owner Rajeev Marwah, who then gave his wife’s mobile number as she had a Google Pay account. The mobile number was further given to the suspect for transferring the payment. However, they realised that Rs 40,000 was debited from the bank account.

A complaint regarding the fraud was made to the UT police following which the cyber cell has initiated an investigation into the matter.
