Mohali, July 14

To end the water woes of local residents, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has awarded a contract to Germany-based company M/s Veolia (India) Private Limited for setting up a water treatment plant (WTP) in Sinhpur village to augment the supply of treated canal water from the Bhakra main line.

Giving information, Punjab Housing and Urban Development Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said the MNC would complete the construction of the WTP by December 2020.

“The estimated cost of the plant, which will be constructed over 33 acres of land, will be nearly Rs 115 crore,” said the minister, adding that with the construction of the WTP, Mohali residents would start getting sufficient supply of potable water.

Against the current demand of over 35 MGD water, Mohali has been getting just 13 MGD water. Of the total 13 MGD, a total of 10 MGD water is being received from the Kajauli Waterworks, while the rest of the water supply here depends on tube wells.

“As the groundwater is depleting, tubewells are getting ineffective. Hence, supply of canal water has become a better option,” said Sarkaria.

It is to be noted that there is a proposal to supply 80 MGD water through Phase 5, 6, 7 and 8 pipeline of Kajauli Waterworks. The GMADA has already laid 2,200 mm dia MS pipes from Kajauli head works to Sinhpur village near Mohali.
