Homeless man falls into pit, dies

Had been staying in vicinity for past seven years

A shelterless man fell in a pit dug up near an under-construction building on VIP Road in Zirakpur and died on Tuesday night. Deceased identified as Chunni Lal had been staying in the building’s vicinity for the past seven years as he had no home and family members.

Locals said the victim fell in the pit dug up for basement where there was no lighting, barricading or caution signs installed by the contractor or owner. Passersby saw the victim in a pit with injury marks on head and other parts of the body.

The victim’s body was sent to the Dera Bassi sub-divisional hospital in a van of a philanthropist on Wednesday morning for a post-mortem examination. The police said the exact cause of death would be known after the arrival of autopsy report. The police will wait for 72 hours for the kin of the deceased to claim his body.
