The UT Administration has decided to set up a horse riding training centre at Sarangpur. The UT has identified three acres for the purpose.

Sources said the decision to establish the centre was taken during a meeting held under the chairmanship of UT Adviser Manoj Parida. It was decided that the centre would be given to a society, which has been into the field of horse riding training.

Expression of Interest will be invited and the centre will be given to a society selected through transparent and fair process. While the society will run the centre, the Administration will also have control over its functioning as its representatives will be part of the managing committee of the centre.

The land will remain with the Administration.

Meanwhile, the UT Administration has asked the Chandigarh Horse Riders’ Society to vacate the premises from the Sukhna Lake Sports Complex.

The land will be converted into a bird sanctuary. Sources said the bird sanctuary would be developed as a tourist spot.

The Administration had given the site to the society in 2004 for promoting equestrian sports.

The society was also told to pay Rs 1,500 per month as lease money. It was regularly paid till September 2017, after which the Sports Council refused to accept it.

The society has trained around 1,500 children and won numerous competitions.

An official of the UT Administration said there was no facility for equestrian sports in the city so far. But with the new centre, common people and students would also have access to it.
