Tara Devi, 49, has come all the way from Kolkata to Chandigarh to get herself treated for jaundice.

Due to the week-long doctor’s strike in Kolkata that began on June 11 due to the alleged assault on two doctors at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH), Sealdah, West Bengal, a lot of patients were referred to various hospitals in the country.

Tara Devi was referred to the PGI on June 16 because of the increase in the level of bilirubin, a symptom of jaundice.

When asked about the situation, she said, “On the evening of June 16, a doctor of a private clinic in Sealdah told me that my bilirubin level has increased drastically. Due to the ongoing strike, he referred me to the PGI for treatment. My son rushed with me the same night and we landed in Chandigarh the next morning.”

The doctors called off the strike on the eve of June 17 when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee decided to meet the protesting doctors and accepted their demands related to hospital security.

Roshan Amar Ujala, son of Tara Devi, said, “Though initially we faced problem while admitting my mother at Nehru Hospital, PGI, she finally got admitted on June 24.”
