JCB driver busy on phone mows down two-year-old boy at Nayagaon

A two-year-old boy was crushed under the wheels of an earthmover in Singha Devi Colony of Nayagaon in Mohali on Thursday. The boy, Adab, was playing on the road when an earthmover being driven at a high speed took him in its spate around 12 noon.

His father Masood, a migrant labourer from Bihar, was away for work when the incident took place while his mother was inside their home. The family has five children.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the JCB driver was talking on the phone while driving the vehicle at a high speed. He fled the spot after the accident even as passersby tried to stop him, colony residents alleged.

The police reached the spot on getting information about the incident.

Cops said the absconding driver had been booked for negligent driving and culpable homicide at the Nayagaon police station.

The investigating officer said the suspect had been identified.

The vehicle is reportedly owned by Rakesh of Nada village.

Labourer dies in Eco City-1

Meanwhile, a 45-year-old labourer, Jatinder Pal, a father of five, died after an iron shuttering plate fell on him at an under-construction house in Eco City-1 at New Chandigarh on Thursday afternoon. The victim, a native of Bihar, was rushed to a local doctor but could not survive. The police have started an investigation into the incident. The body was shifted to the Kharar subdivisional hospital for a post-mortem examination.
