Three persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested by the Chandigarh Police for allegedly murdering a 27-year-old garbage collector. The victim had had lent money to one of the suspects and he took his mobile following which the suspects thrashed him to death.
The victim, Sandeep, was found murdered near a public toilet in Sector 25 on January 22. His hands were tied and he had blunt injury marks on his body.
Two suspects have been identified as Ranjit (24) and Raman (25), both residents of Sector 25 who work as garbage collectors. A 17-year-old boy was also apprehended by the police, who is the third suspect in the case. The police said the victim had left his house for Sector 38, where he met the suspects. Since the victim had lent money to one of the suspects, he took his mobile phone.
The suspects got infuriated and caught the victim and started thrashing him with sticks. The police said the victim was thrashed with a stick that had nails in it.
After the victim died, the suspects dumped his body in Sector 25 and fled from the spot.
The three suspects were arrested from near the motor market in Sector 38, today.
The victim’s autopsy was conducted today at the Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. The police said it was yet to be ascertained whether the victim was sodomised also. “We are waiting for the postmortem report,” said a police official.
Two of the suspects were produced in the court, which remanded them in one-day police remand.
The police said Ranjit and Raman had a criminal record in the past.
Ranjit was arrested in four cases, including robbery, theft and burglary, which were registered against him in Chandigarh in the past, the police added.
Earlier, Raman was arrested in a case of robbery, the police said.
