Kajal nets 4 in Punjab''s 5-3 win

CHANDIGARH:Hockey Punjab registered a 5-3 win over Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu in an exciting opening match of the 4th Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship in Kanpur today.

Hockey Punjab registered a 5-3 win over Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu in an exciting opening match of the 4th Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship in Kanpur today.

Hockey Punjab rushed to a 4-0 lead inside the opening 13 minutes with the help of Kajal (1st minute, 5th, 11th, 13th). Navneet Kaur (20th) scored the fifth goal for the side. N Rubasri (17th, 19th) and S Patricia (17th) scored for Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu.

Hockey Haryana produced a great performance to beat Hockey Karnataka 3-1 as skipper Annu scored for Hockey Haryana in the 7th and 11th minutes, while Deepika (14th) also registered her name on the score-sheet. Hockey Karnataka's only goal came in the 14th minute through SP Kruthika.

Hockey Jharkhand defeated Hockey Odisha 7-3. Deepika Soreng (8th, 15th, 17th), Betan Dungdung (3rd, 10th), Beauty Dungdung (19th) and Birajini Ekka (20th) scored for Jharkhand. Dipti Lakra (10th), Khusbu Kujur (12th) and captain Asmita Barla (20th) scored for Hockey Odisha.

Hosts Uttar Pradesh Hockey snatched a late victory as they beat Hockey Maharashtra 3-2. Hockey Maharashtra twice came from behind in the match, but could not register any points in their opening match. Uttar Pradesh Hockey's goals were scored by Shreya Singh (7th, 19th) and Lalrin Diki (3rd). Hockey Maharashtra’s goals were scored by Lalhlunmawii (5th) and H Lalruatfeli (10th).

Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Hockey Karnataka defeated Hockey Punjab 5-4. Abharan Sudev (4th, 17th), Mohammed Raheel Mouseen (11th, 12th) and VT Rathan Muthanna (20th) scored for Hockey Karnataka. Varinder Singh (11th, 18th), Sharanjeet Singh (3rd) and Brumdeep Singh (9th) scored for Hockey Punjab. Hockey Jharkhand beat Hockey Odisha 3-2, Hockey Maharashtra defeated Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 5-1 and Hockey Haryana posted a 4-3 win over Uttar Pradesh Hockey. Pradeep Mor (1st), Manpreet (2nd), Jagwant Singh (14th), Prabhjot Singh (16th) scored for Hockey Haryana, while Mohd Saif Khan (10th), Raj Kumar Pal (14th) and Mohd Amir Khan (18th) scored for Uttar Pradesh Hockey.
