CHANDIGARH: Visitors Kapurthala dug deep to deny Chandigarh an outright win after they were asked to follow on by the hosts on the second and final day of their Katoch Shield match at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here on Saturday.

Visitors Kapurthala dug deep to deny Chandigarh an outright win after they were asked to follow on by the hosts on the second and final day of their Katoch Shield match at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here on Saturday. 

Trailing Chandigarh by 277 runs, Kapurthala boys, in their second innings, scored 98/3 in 40 overs to draw the match. Shaheed Khan made 45 runs, while Harpreet remained unbeaten on 29. 

Jagjeet Singh claimed 2/21 for the hosts, while Mandeep took 1/21.

Earlier, resuming the day at 278/3, Chandigarh declared their innings closed on 353/4. 

Gaurav Puri, who was batting on 15 last evening, made a 59-ball 50, while Talwinder added 39 runs to his overnight tally of 18. Jaspreet was the most effective bowler for the visitors, claiming 2/69. 

In reply, Kapurthala were bowled out for just 76 runs in their first innings as Bhagmender took 4/16 for the hosts. Arshdeep Singh returned with figures of 3/21. Sukhdeep Singh made an unbeaten 31 for Kapurthala.

Courtesy their first innings lead, Chandigarh got three points from the match, while Kapurthala added one point to their kitty. 

Amritsar rout Ropar

At the Gandhi Grounds in Amritsar, the hosts registered an innings and 169-run win over Ropar.   

Trailing Amritsar by 252 runs, Ropar in their second innings were all out for 239 runs. Vinay Chaudhary (5/105) and Rohit Gulati (5/54) proved to be their nemesis once again as the spin duo took five wickets each to wrap up the visitors.     

Chaudhary, who had grabbed 4/34 in the first innings, claimed 5/105 on Saturday, while Gulati took a match haul of 9/90 after accounting for five wickets in Ropar’s second innings. 

Earlier, Amritsar declared their first innings closed at 408/3. Rohan Marwaha made 154 runs, while Abhishek Sharma retired hurt after scoring a 113-ball 147. Skipper Sharad Lumba hammered 67-ball 94.

Ropar had scored just 156 runs in their first innings.

Patiala beat Hoshiarpur

Openers Prabjot Singh and Prabhsimran Singh scored a century each to help Patiala register an innings and 74-run win against Hoshiarpur. 

Chasing Hoshiarpur’s first innings total of 159, Patiala declared their innings closed at 374/2. Their innings was bolstered by 243-run opening wicket partnership between Prabjot and Prabhsimran. 

Prabjot made 110 runs, while Parbsimran cracked 188-ball 178. Sanvir Singh remained not out on 50, while Mandeep Inder Bawa added run-a-ball 32 to the Patiala innings.

Trailing Patiala by 215 runs, Hoshiarpur, in their second innings, were bowled out for 141. 

Gurwinder Singh Bhuller (4/37) and Brahm Dayal Singh (4/25) took four wickets each for Patiala. 

Akash Ghai (34) was the top scorer for Hoshiarpur. Amit Thakur contributed 25 runs to the chase.

Ludhiana thrash Ferozepur 

Kashish scored a century before Hartejjasvi claimed a fifer to help Ludhiana beat Ferozepur by an innings and 143 runs on Saturday.

Resuming the day at 220/2, Ludhiana declared their first innings closed on 283/3. Kashish scored a 189-ball 133, while Deepin Chitkara made a strokeful 84. 

Tawinder took 2/60 for Ferozepur, while Piyush bagged 1/55. 

After being bundled out for just 72 runs in their first innings, Ferozepur batters dished out yet another disappointing performance in their second innings as they were bowled out for 68 runs in 21.3 overs. 

Hartejjasvi returned with figures of 5/25, while Sukhjinder (2/10) and Simran (2/27) took two wickets apiece.

The third round matches will start from May 27.
