Chandigarh, August 17

The UT police have arrested a battery thief. His arrest led to the recovery of 31 batteries.

In the recent past, there was a spate of two-wheeler battery thefts from outside the Punjab and Haryana High Court, near the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat and from near government offices in Sector 9.

Seven theft cases were registered in this regard at the Sector 3 police station and an investigation was initiated.

On August 16, a team led by Inspector Neeraj Sarna, SHO of the Sector 3 police station, nabbed the suspect, identified as Sushil Kumar (30), a resident of Kharar, from near Rock Garden.

The police said the suspect, who works as a part-time waiter at a tavern in Kharar, used to carry a food delivery bag with ‘Zomato’ written on it. He used to park his motorcycle near other two-wheelers and steal the batteries.

“He used to sell batteries to vegetable vendors in apni Mandi. These vendors used the batteries at their stalls for lights,” said a police official.
