Kidney transplant cases of Manipur natives, which are under process at the PGI, have also come under the UT police scanner following the unearthing of a kidney transplant racket.

Sources said the police were verifying the documents of both donor and the recipient to ensure they are not attempting to get the kidney transplanted on fake documents.

“The documents, including Aadhaar cards, are being verified to ensure they are genuine,” said a police source.

The UT police had registered a case on September 5 after Thoi Devi (26), a native of Manipur, was lured to Chandigarh on the pretext of providing her a job and the accused, including a woman, Abem, planned to get her kidney transplanted. Earlier, the victim was not aware of the intentions of the suspects. However, when she came to know that the suspects wanted to get her kidney transplanted, she escaped from their clutches and informed the police. Forged affidavits in which the victim and her family had consented for transplant were recovered from the victim’s possession.

Meanwhile, a fake Aadhaar card mentioning Thoi as wife of kidney recipient Bimal was also recovered. Later, the police also arrested Abem.

Bimal was supposed to pay Rs 4.50 lakh to the prime suspects, including Thoba and Surjit Singh, who are absconding at present.
