It was a clean sweep for the ruling Congress in the panchayat samiti (PS) and zila parishad (ZP) elections in the district. The Congress registered its win in the 75 PS and five ZP zones as the counting was still in progress for the remaining zones here today. In all, there are 95 zones for panchayat samitis and 10 zones for the zila parishads in five blocks of the Ropar district.

Congress ZP candidates Bimal Kaur from Bela and Karam Singh from Kotla Nihang were declared winners. Similarly, Desraj from Takhtgarh, Narinder Puri from Bharatgarh and Manjit Kaur from Morinda (rural), all Congress candidates, were also declared winners in the ZP elections.

The party has won 12 seats in Morinda out of the 15 zones while the remaining three seats were cornered by the SAD. Similarly, in the 15 zones of Chamkaur Sahib the Congress got 14 seats and its rival SAD got a mere one.

In Nurpur Bedi, the Congress won 14 seats while SAD got two out the 18 zones. One BJP and an Independent candidate also won from there. In the 23 zones of Ropar, results were declared for the 19 out of which the Congress bagged 17 seats. One seat each was won by the SAD and an Independent candidate. Similarly, out of the 24 blocks in Anandpur Sahib, results were declared for the 19 zones where the Congress won 18 seats and remaining one seat was won by the BJP.
