A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at her house in Gholumajra village here today.
The police said the victim, identified as Geeta, allegedly set herself afire after pouring a chemical on her body. Geeta, along with her family, had shifted from Panchkula a few months ago, said sources.
Phool Chand, incharge, Lelhi police post, said the woman went to the washroom around 12.15 pm and set herself ablaze.
Geeta’s sister-in-law, who was present in the house along with her five-year-old child, heard her screams and rushed towards the washroom after noticing smoke emanating from it. They found the door bolted from inside.
With the help of others, they managed to break open the door and found the victim completely burnt. They rushed her to the Civil hospital, Dera Bassi. Doctors, however, referred her to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where she died.
The police said the victim’s parents were not at home when the incident happened. Geeta was the youngest among the four siblings. Her family members said they had no clue why she took the extreme step.
The police recovered a matchbox and a bottle containing chemical from the spot. No suicide note was recovered.
Meanwhile, the police are scouring the call detail records of the victim’s mobile phone. Inquest proceedings have been initiated in the matter at the Lehli police post.
Decomposed body found in Zirakpur
Zirakpur: The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found under mysterious circumstance here on Thursday. The police suspect that the woman, believed to be in her mid 30s, died four to five days ago. A resident of a nearby society spotted the body and informed the police. The police said the body was decomposed and no other item was recovered that could lead to her identification. The body has been kept in the mortuary at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for identification. OC
