Last rites of hockey legend Gurbax Singh held in Zirakpur

The last rites of former Indian hockey team captain and Olympian Gurbax Singh Grewal were held in Zirakpur on Saturday. He had passed away on Friday.

Relatives and members of the hockey fraternity attended the ceremony.

Born on April 1, 1942, in Lyallpur, Punjab Province of British India (Faisalabad now in Pakistan), Gurbax came to Mumbai in his 20s to play hockey for the Western Railways in Mumbai. He would go on to become a member of Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

After retiring, he went on to coach various Mumbai -based teams for many years and was also associated with the Indian women’s hockey team for a brief period. He was later elected as the Honorary Secretary of the MHA.
