In a bid to decrease its electricity bill, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation has decided to set up the smart street light system. It has tied up with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) of the Government of India for the purpose.

The EESL will replace sodium lights with LED lights. The company will hold a survey to identify dark spots in the city. The company will set up a control and command centre for operating the smart street light system in the city. The centre will be equipped with an automatic system, which will provide information to officials about faulty lights in the city. The agency will be responsible for rectifying faults in LED lights.

At present, the street lights in the city have to be manually switched on and off for which several persons have been appointed by the MC.

However, after the installation of the smart street lighting system, a person sitting in the centre can switch on and switch off the lights. The company will also be responsible for maintaining the street light system in the city for seven years.

MC Administrator Rajesh Jogpal said the work had been given to the EESL as per the financial model decided by the Central Government. He said the new smart street light system will help reduce the electricity bill as it will consume less power.

He said the new system will not only provide more light, but also reduce the electricity bill by 40 per cent every month. The saved amount will be given to the agency for the maintenance of the smart street light system.
