Panchkula, November 28
Smoking a cigarette proved fatal for a 40-year-old man at his house at Thana Badiyal in Morni last evening.
The victim, Madan Singh, died after the mattress he was lying on caught fire due to a burning stub while he was consuming alcohol.
The police said the incident came to light when the victim’s brother, who lives around 50 metres away, noticed the smoke emanating from the house around 11 pm.
He entered the house and saw fire around the bed. He shifted the partially charred body of his brother, a habitual drinker, to the hospital, where he breathed his last.
On the basis of statements of the victim’s family members, the police have ruled out any foul play behind the incident.
The body was shifted to the Sector 6 Civil Hospital for post-mortem. It was later sent to BPS Government Medical College, Khanpur Kalan, for forensic examination. —TNS
