A city resident has fallen prey to a debit card fraud after Rs 36,000 was siphoned off from his Canara Bank account. Earlier, ATMs of this bank were targeted by Romanian nationals. They had installed card cloning devices at the ATMs.

Sukhjit Singh was in shock when he received messages on his mobile phone regarding three transactions of Rs 10,000 each and another transaction of Rs 6,000. These transactions were made from his bank account on September 18. “I have the ATM card with me and I did not reveal its PIN to anyone,” he said.

Sukhjit said he saw the messages after a few hours and tried to get his debit card blocked. “I repeatedly called on several helpline numbers of Canara Bank from my registered mobile number. I even tried to get my card blocked by sending messages on the number provided by the bank, but to no avail,” he said.

Almost after four hours, the victim managed to get his card blocked.

Sukhjit has filed a complaint with the police at the public window in Sector 9.

Incidents of Canara Bank customers losing their hard-earned money have left the police worried as last month, foreign nationals had targeted Canara Bank ATMs by installing card cloning devices.

The crime branch of the UT police had arrested three Romanian nationals for installing skimmers and cameras at three Canara Bank ATMs in Sector 35, Mani Majra and Sector 17.
