In probably the biggest haul of drugs by the UT police, the crime branch has nabbed a 37-year-old man who was ferrying 280 kg of ganja in an MPV. A pistol was also recovered from him.

A team of the crime branch, led by Inspector Amanjot Singh, was patrolling near the IT Park in the view of the Lok Sabha elections when they nabbed the accused, identified as Mintu, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony (BDC), Sector 26.

The police said Mintu was coming from the Kishangarh chowk and going towards Shastri Nagar Light Point in a Toyota Innova Crysta. The vehicle had 14 bags of ganja weighing 280 kg, besides a .32-bore pistol and five cartridges. The rear seats of the MPV had been removed to make space for the bags containing ganja.

According to the police, 1 kg of ganja costs about Rs 20,000. “The accused procured the ganja from South at cheap rates and he was to sell it in the tricity,” the police said.

Mintu earlier worked as a fruit vendor at the Grain Market, Sector 26.

“He used to give loans to vendors at the Grain Market from his ill-gotten money,” the police added. He was produced before the court that sent him to six-day police remand.
